First Aid and Medication in School
At Christ Church, the safety and well-being of every child is of paramount importance. We have clear procedures in place for managing illness, accidents, and the administration of medication during the school day.
First Aid in School
From time to time, children may become unwell or experience a minor accident while at school. We have a number of trained and qualified first aiders who are on hand to supervise and care for your child in these situations.
- If we feel it is necessary, we will contact you or another nominated adult immediately.
- For this reason, please ensure we have up-to-date contact numbers, including alternative emergency contacts.
- In the case of a head injury, even if it appears minor, parents will always be informed, as symptoms can develop later in the day.
Our aim is always to respond promptly, provide appropriate care, and keep you fully informed.
Medical Conditions and Allergies
If your child has a medical condition - including allergies - that may require emergency treatment or impact them during the school day, please inform us as soon as possible. This includes conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or severe allergies (e.g. food allergies requiring an Epipen).
- Please keep us updated with any changes in your child’s condition or treatment.
- It is vital that we hold accurate, current information to ensure your child receives the support they need.
Administration of Medication
Essential Medication Only
Medicines should only be brought into school if essential - where it would be detrimental to a child’s health if they did not receive the medicine during the school day.
- Parents are encouraged to speak with their child’s doctor to see if doses can be scheduled outside school hours.
- For example, medication prescribed three times a day can typically be taken before school, after school, and at bedtime.
Prescribed Medicines
If your child needs to take prescribed medication during the school day (e.g. antibiotics, asthma inhalers, Epipens):
- Parents must complete an Administration of Medicine form, available from the school office.
- Medication must be handed directly to the school office upon arrival and should never be left in a child’s bag.
- All medication must:
- Be in the riginal container, as dispensed by the pharmacist.
- Be clearly labelled with yur child’s name, class, dosage instructions, and expiry date.
- Include the prescriber’s instructins, and where necessary, a suitable measuring device (e.g. medicine spon or syringe).
- Be in date - please check expiry dates regularly.
Non-Prescribed Medicines
We are only able to administer non-prescribed medicine (such as over-the-counter pain relief) in exceptional circumstances and only with the Headteacher’s authorisation.
If you have any questions about our procedures or need to discuss your child’s medical needs, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. Working together, we can ensure that your child is safe, supported, and well cared for at all times.
