Promoting Positive Behaviour

Behaviour Principles

We aim to create a caring Christian community where:

  • All children are valued and nurtured.
  • Positive behaviour is taught, rewarded and modelled.
  • Every child learns in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.

Behaviour that does not meet expectations is addressed in a way that supports the child to reflect and improve, making clear that it is the behaviour, not the child, that is being criticised.

Our 'Ways to Be'

These are central to our behaviour expectations and displayed throughout the school:

  • Be Kind
  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Your Best
"Treat others as you want them to treat you" – Matthew 7:12

These values are revisited regularly in class and collective worship.

Working Together

We believe that good behaviour is built on strong, positive relationships between children, staff and parents. Parents are key partners in:

  • Supporting the ‘Ways to Be’.
  • Ensuring good attendance and punctuality.
  • Communicating changes or concerns.
  • Celebrating achievements and responding to challenges constructively.

Celebrating Positive Behaviour

We use a wide range of rewards to encourage and celebrate positive behaviour, including:

  • Praise and encouragement.
  • Stickers and certificates.
  • House points.
  • Positive notes or calls home.
  • Recognition in class, collective worship and through displays.
  • Special awards such as Pupil of the Week and lunchtime 'Keys'.

Addressing Behaviour Concerns

Our approach to behaviour is consistent, fair and focused on helping children make better choices. We use a stepped system of reminders, time out, and support, escalating to senior staff or referrals only where necessary. We also:

  • Record significant incidents.
  • Inform parents promptly where needed.
  • Offer support plans for children who need more help.

We do not use shouting, humiliation, or sarcasm, and any sanctions are age-appropriate and supportive.

Bullying and Prejudice

We do not tolerate any form of bullying or discriminatory behaviour. All incidents are taken seriously, investigated, and logged. Racist, sexist, or homophobic language is addressed with appropriate education and follow-up with parents where necessary.

Children with Additional Needs

We recognise that every child is unique. Where needed, we adapt strategies to meet a child’s individual needs in partnership with parents and external agencies. We work to support children in a way that helps them flourish within our expectations for behaviour.

Physical Intervention

Physical intervention is used only when absolutely necessary, to ensure safety, and always as a last resort. All incidents are logged and reviewed. Positive, appropriate physical contact is used with professional judgement to guide, support or comfort children as needed.

Suspension and Exclusion

Suspension or exclusion may be used in response to serious breaches of our policy, or where allowing the pupil to remain would seriously impact others. This is always a last resort and follows statutory procedures.

Parent Support

We ask all parents to:

  • Support the school’s vision and ‘Ways to Be’.
  • Communicate openly and constructively with school staff.
  • Raise concerns through appropriate channels, not directly with other parents or children.

We are committed to working together to support your child’s behaviour and wellbeing. For more detailed information, our full Behaviour Policy is available on the school website.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss your child’s behaviour, please speak to their class teacher or a member of the senior leadership team.
